Why I Started NG Career
My name is Babatunde Oladepo, and I started NG Career after my own frustrating experience navigating the scholarship and international job landscape as a Nigerian. In 2019, I spent nearly four months applying to what I thought were legitimate scholarship programs, only to discover that half the deadlines I was working toward had already passed. The websites I relied on were simply copying information from other websites without ever checking the original university sources. One program I applied to had actually been discontinued two years earlier, but it was still being listed on dozens of Nigerian “scholarship websites” as if it were active. The turning point came when I almost lost money to a “recruitment agency” that promised to secure me a job in Canada. They had a professional-looking website, testimonials that seemed genuine, and a process that felt legitimate. They asked for an initial “document verification fee” of fifty thousand naira, with promises of additional fees for “visa processing” and “employer liaison services.” Something felt wrong, so I decided to verify the company’s claims independently. I searched for the Canadian employers they claimed to work with and found no record of any partnership. I checked the Corporate Affairs Commission database and found the company had only been registered three months earlier. I reached out to others who had used similar services and discovered a pattern of people paying fees and never hearing back. That experience taught me two critical lessons.
